Clivia

History
Clivia, like the Calla Lily, originates from South Africa. The plant was introduced into Western Europe during the 19th century. The cultivation of Clivia was primarily based in Belgium for decades. Clivia began to be cultivated on a commercial scale only many years later, largely due to the plant's long and complicated cultivation period. Clivias are relatively expensive since they take two years to cultivate.

General
Dynaplant grows Clivia from seeds produced by in-house plants. We have introduced an in-house selection breeding programme for the further development of the plants. Dynaplant cultivates exclusively orange Clivias for the market. These plants are available from November to the end of April. Our Clivias can often be recognised from their Dynaplant pot cover or Dynaplant stick-in label.

Care tips
Although Clivias require little care, some points are essential. Clivias cannot withstand frost, so you need to take care with outdoor plants. You also need to keep Clivias in a shaded spot, since they are shade-loving plants and can be scorched by direct sunlight. Clivias grow best at temperatures between 5 and 25 °C.

Clivias grow best when watered regularly, about once a week. Water less frequently in the winter. Make sure that the potted Clivia is not left to stand in water since, like many other plants, it will 'drown' if its roots are soaked.

Clivia must go through a dormant period before it can flower, since this period promotes the development of the bud. Cliva's natural dormant period is in the winter. You can promote good flowering by creating a dormant period: put the Clivia in an environment with a temperature of between 5 and 12 °C for two months. The plant then needs little light and very little water. All you need to do is to keep the soil slightly moist.

After the end of the dormant period, the stem will lengthen and a bud will develop. You can break or cut off the stem after flowering. You can repeat this process as often as you like.
